Nevertell: II - Theatre Meeting

Andrea Foster had the strangest dream.

Just who were those two anyway? Such an odd pair of siblings. She'd never seen them before in her life. The little sister, from what Andrea could remember, didn't look older than 11. She was an adorable little girl, but there was something… odd about her. Creepy even. As if there was something really wrong hiding beneath her sweet young face… However, she wasn't as bad as the brother. No, the brother was what really got Andrea spooked. Never mind he put a knife to her throat in the dream. There was a menacing glint in his eyes. He would have had no regrets killing her, or anyone else who was a potential threat to his dear little sister. She understood that elder siblings could be protective, but that? A shiver went down Andrea's spine as she thought about the cold steel pressed against her throat. That dream felt so disturbingly real. At least it was only a dream, and nothing more. Right?

Well, wrong.

Because right now, she was at the very same party, at the very same manor, at the very same time her dream occurred. She wore a dark crimson ballroom gown that went all the way down and skimmed the floor's shiny surface. Matching gloves wrapped around her fingers and all the way up to her elbows. The entire gown was made of silk; shimmering under the brilliant chandelier light. Even with her unusual black round specs and unruly brunette hair, she looked as lovely as any of the other belles of the ball. Not that it mattered much to her. "Hate" wasn't exactly the correct word describe how Andrea felt about these formal occasions. She simply didn't feel too comfortable in such a scene. She felt out of place. As beautiful as the crimson gown was, it didn't feel right on her; she would have preferred something else.

But the discomfort that gnawed her stomach did not come from the stuffy atmosphere. It was the strong déjà vu; the anxiety of her dream coming to reality. The inane chatter of the crowd drowned out in her mind as she waited….

She waited for the music box melody to creep into the air. She waited for the people around her to fall into silence. She waited for the unease to sink into everyone's stomachs, much like it was for her. She waited for the little girl's eerily innocent voice to resonate from the speakers.

"Listen to me…
Listen to me…
My children…
Listen to me…"

There.

As the little girl continued her song, Andrea's heart began to beat faster and faster. Her breath became more and more shallow. She looked around; she was the only one who wasn't transfixed by the little girl's strange melody. Everyone else was looking up at the speakers in a dumbfounded trance. But, she knew what was coming next. She knew of the panic that was soon to come.

"I'll be…
What you want me to be…
That's why I'm dancin'…
Dancin'…"

Even though Andrea knew what was coming, her heart still went into shock as the explosion sounded off in the next room. The scene of chaos replayed before her; everyone around her scurried around for safety, their screams echoed in the vast ballroom. Looking left, right, and all around, she tried to find her parents, but they were nowhere to be found. They probably ran out already, she thought.

What was she to do now? Was she really going to play out the rest of her dream? Was she really going to go to that majestic and broken down theatre? Was she really going to go through with having that guy put a knife to her throat in real life? Well, she could always go prepared. She was planning on going there anyway. Actually, that abandoned theatre was not an exclusive safe haven to the siblings; it was first Andrea's. It wasn't like she was unfamiliar with the dangerous outskirts of Nevertell. Truth be told, she was a caged bird in her home – a caged bird that had some occasional secret escapes. And this was the perfect opportunity for one of them. So, she ran out of the chaotic ballroom, blending into the crowd. After dashing out of the mansion, she found the closest place she could hide, shrugged out of her dress like a caterpillar coming out of a cocoon, and revealed the more casual clothes she was wearing underneath: a light grey long-sleeved shirt with black brush stokes circling around a white heart, and dark grey pants with black stitch-like patterns sewn in various places. She stashed her dress in one of the bushes – the same bush where she hid her sling bag before she entered the party. As said, she was going prepared.

__

It took Andrea a while to get to her abandoned theatre. She had to travel all the way to the outskirts of Nevertell, where tenements loomed over you and crooks crawled in the shadows. Naturally, the aristocracy and poverty of one city were a good distance away from each other. It took Andrea about an hour for her to get to her secret haven. It took her about a minute upon entering the building to get tackled to the dusty floor and have a knife to her throat "again." She tried to prevent being attacked a "second" time by entering as quietly as possible, but the little girl was quicker than she thought – the little girl's brother even quicker.

"Who the hell are you?"

Even though Andrea knew what was going to happen, it was still a shock. It didn't help that this time it was in real life either. But suddenly, she reached for the pepper spray in her sling bag, sprayed it in the young man's eyes, getting a curse out of him and making his hands fly up to his eyes. Roughly pushing him away as fast as she could, she then scrambled back up to her feet. But the young man was distracted for only a couple of seconds as he recovered and was ready to fight back. Quickly and without thinking, she pulled out her pocket knife from her sling bag, holding it in both hands. With eyes shut tight and hands shaking, she shouted, "S-Stay back! I have a knife, too!"

The young man stared at the trembling girl for a moment. After watching the girl for a few seconds longer, he snickered under his breath. He got up, walked over to her, and tapped the pocket knife's handle, smirking all the while. "You forgot to, um…the blade's not out, sweetheart."

Snapping out of her defensive state, Andrea opened her eyes to see that he was right. The poor girl, her whole face flushed in embarrassment. She also saw that he was right in front of her now. She jackknifed away, flipping the knife open. "N-Now it is!" She yelled indignantly, going back into a defensive stance.

A smirk still on his face, the young man swiftly grabbed one of Andrea's wrists and twisted it – not enough to hurt her, but enough to force the pocket knife out of her hands. He then picked up the weapon, snapping it shut with one hand. He gently grasped her hand, holding it with her palm up, and placed his other hand on top of hers, putting the knife back into her hand. "Let's not fight, shall we?" I'd hate to harm a pretty girl."

Then, and quite suddenly, the little sister hopped over to her brother. "Big brothur, who is the ladyyy?" She asked, hugging her brother's arm and tilting her head at an almost impossible angle.

Andrea stared at the two in confusion and disbelief. Just who were these strange siblings? Were they dangerous or not? A sane person wouldn't set off a bomb, but a dangerous person wouldn't give their opponent's weapon back. Or was the guy just that arrogant? What did they plan to do with her? How did they even find this place? If this abandoned theatre was a safe haven to them as well, then how come she's never seen them before? It couldn't have been just coincidence. Perhaps they were the new comers that everyone has been talking about? They certainly didn't look like any normal new comers. Andrea took this moment to get a better look at the siblings.

The little sister was adorable in her own quirky way. She had midnight dark hair tied up into a high, scruffy ponytail. However, her natural hair was starkly contrasted by the bright red braid on the opposite side of her bangs, which covered one of her charcoal eyes. She wore a magenta shirt with diagonal black stripes and a pleated long black skirt. The skirt led down to the young girl's black and white striped socks, which were covered by black sneakers. The little girl seemed harmless enough. She was tiny and soft-looking….almost like a rag doll, especially with the couple of cloth patches sewn on her skin. But there was something wrong with the look in her eyes. It was as if all of her wasn't…quite there.

Same thing could be said for the brother. Along with the off look in his coal black eyes, there was also a glint of trouble and chaos. Like his sister, his hair covered one of his eyes. Unlike his sister, he had unruly dark brown hair that stopped short at his chin. Even though his hair covered much of his face, what was shown was…admittedly handsome. His face was angular and had a strong bone structure. But he was more disturbing than alluring. The mischievous grin on his lips told of sin and anarchy making Andrea feel like prey under his playful gaze. His attire didn't help either. His black slacks and black boots were normal enough, but it was the dark brown long-sleeved shirt covered by a dark grey pinstriped vest that gave him an odd look. He definitely looked like someone not to be trusted.

But…just who were these two? Why did they set off a bomb? Why was that bomb set off in another room rather than in the room where everyone was? Why are they not hurting her now? Out of pity? Or were they just waiting for a better moment? But why did they even give her pocket knife back? Were these two dangerous or not? Were they even sane?

"Who ARE you two?"

The young man chuckled. "I believe my little sister asked first~?"

"………"

He raised an eyebrow at Andrea's silence. He chuckled once more. "Can we at least get a name, sweetheart?"

"………"

The little girl looked to Andrea, up to her brother, then back to Andrea. She hopped over to the stunned young lady. "Miiiiiss? Are you okaaaaay?" Her concern went to waste as she was too close, making Andrea flinch and jump back. This had the little girl blinking in curiosity and confusion. But she was more amused than offended. "Why is lady all scaredy cat?" She giggled, then held out a hand to Andrea, smiling a wide and cheerful smile. "Halloooo~!"

"……" Andrea slowly brought her hand up to shake the little girl's. "…Hi……"

Still smiling sweetly, the little girl said, "My name's Charlotte, and that's my big brothur, Evan!" She pointed to her brother not far behind, and then turned back to Andrea. "What's your name, miss?"

"…Andrea……"

"Andrea, huh?" Evan walked up to her and grabbed her hand once more, this time bringing it up to his lips. "Well, it's a pleasure to meet you, Miss Andrea," he said softly before pressing a kiss to her hand.

An involuntary blush tinted her cheeks, but Andrea was more crept out than charmed. Taking her hand back, she struggled to find words. "…Y-You two aren't the newcomers everyone's talking about…are you?"

Evan exchanged a look with his sister Charlotte, probably confused by Andrea's rather random question. He looked back to Andrea with that ever-present smirk. "Oh, no. We've been in Nevertell for quite a while."

So these two were already residents? How come she never came across these two before? Did they come to this old theatre often? Then again, he could have been lying….He could have been lying every time he spoke. "And…" Andrea fished for another question, "what are you two doing here?"

To which, Evan shot back with his playful smirk not faltering for an instant, "Well, what are you doing here?"

Andrea was struck silent once more. Talking to this man was like talking to a child. Playful, sarcastic, mischievous, not taking a single word seriously…

Speaking of children, young Charlotte looked from her brother to Andrea once more – feeling rather bored. A child's patience could only last for so long. She smiled up hopefully at Evan. "Big brothur, I'm hungry. Let's go eat!"

Evan smiled down at Charlotte, ruffling her already scruffy hair. "Sure thing, doll." He then turned to Andrea one last time. "Until we meet again, Miss Andrea." With a gentlemanly bow, he ran off with his sister, leaving Andrea alone. Leaving her in the vast, broken down theatre with more questions than ever before.
